I am an attorney, not a medical or mental health professional. I have practiced meditation for more than 10 years, and I have done extensive reading on meditation, its health benefits, and the many uses of meditation. For about the last 10 years, I have used sound-assisted meditation exercises, and have had many wonderful, impactful experiences as a part of my practice. I was certified as an Outreach Facilitator by The Monroe Institute® (“TMI”) in 2011 and have helped facilitate several meditation workshops using sound-assisted meditation techniques. Through these experiences, I have adapted many of the techniques and ideas I have learned about meditation to benefit my law practice, as well as my personal life. The intent of these Legally Mindful exercises is to make these techniques and ideas available to others to be used as tools to help them benefit from starting or continuing their own meditation practice. Nothing contained in these exercises, or in conjunction with Legally Mindful®, should be taken as medical or psychological advice. If you have any questions about how the use of these exercises could impact an existing mental or physical condition, please consult your personal health care provider before using any Legally Mindful® exercises.
What the Science Says About Safety and Side Effects of Meditation*
- Meditation is generally considered to be safe for healthy people.
- Some research suggests that practicing meditation may reduce blood pressure, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression, and insomnia.
- Some research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially help to improve many health problems and promote healthy behaviors. A 2013 review of three studies suggests that meditation may slow, stall, or even reverse changes that take place in the brain due to normal aging.
- Don’t use meditation to replace conventional care or as a reason to postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem.
- There have been rare reports that meditation could cause or worsen symptoms in people with certain psychiatric problems like anxiety and depression. People with existing mental health conditions should speak with their health care providers before starting a meditative practice.
