I am an attorney, not a medical or mental health professional. I have practiced meditation for over 15 years, and I have done extensive reading on meditation, its health benefits, and the many uses of meditation. For about the last 14 years, I have used sound-assisted meditation (SAM) exercises, and have had many wonderful, impactful experiences as a part of my practice. I was certified as an Outreach Facilitator by The Monroe Institute® (“TMI”) in 2011 and have helped facilitate several meditation workshops using sound-assisted meditation techniques. Through these experiences, I have adapted many of the techniques and ideas I have learned about meditation to benefit my law practice, as well as my personal life. The intent of these Legally Mindful exercises is to make these techniques and ideas available to others to be used as tools to help them benefit from starting or continuing their own meditation practice. Nothing contained in these exercises, or in conjunction with Legally Mindful®, should be taken as medical or psychological advice. If you have any questions about how the use of these exercises could impact an existing mental or physical condition, please consult your personal health care provider before using any Legally Mindful® exercises.

What the Science Says About Safety and Side Effects of Meditation*

  • Meditation is generally considered to be safe for healthy people.
  • Some research suggests that practicing meditation may reduce blood pressure, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression, and insomnia.
  • Some research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially help to improve many health problems and promote healthy behaviors. A 2013 review of three studies suggests that meditation may slow, stall, or even reverse changes that take place in the brain due to normal aging.
  • Don’t use meditation to replace conventional care or as a reason to postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem.
  • There have been rare reports that meditation could cause or worsen symptoms in people with certain psychiatric problems like anxiety and depression. People with existing mental health conditions should speak with their health care providers before starting a meditative practice.

While many of the Legally Mindful®’s powerful educational audio materials, programs and workshops contribute to wellness, they are not intended to replace medical diagnosis and treatment. DO NOT listen to audio-guidance educational materials while driving or operating heavy equipment, or with other devices that may influence your state of consciousness. If you have a tendency towards seizures, auditory disorders (see below), or adverse mental conditions(s), DO NOT use the Legally Mindful® audio-guidance educational materials without first consulting your physician. In the unlikely event that you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, immediately discontinue use.

The Sound-Assisted Meditation sound technology used in the Legally Mindful exercises has been licensed by Legally Mindful from The Monroe Institute®.

Use of the this SAM technology is contraindicated if you experience hyperacusis, an abnormal condition in which the complex electrical signals generated by sound vibrations are misinterpreted, confused, or exaggerated. People with cochlear hyperacusis may feel ear pain, discomfort, annoyance, or some other emotional reaction when certain sounds are heard. In vestibular hyperacusis exposure to sound often results in falling or a loss of balance or postural control and some of the same reactions as with cochlear hyperacusis can also occur. Other symptoms include sudden severe vertigo or nausea. In the unlikely event that you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, immediately discontinue use of the SAM audio technology.

DO NOT listen to SAM technology meditations while driving or operating heavy equipment, or with other devices that may influence brainwave activity. While SAM may contribute to wellness, it is never intended to replace medical diagnosis and treatment. If you have a tendency towards seizures, auditory disorders, or adverse mental conditions(s), DO NOT listen to SAM technology without first consulting your physician. Though rare, should you experience any unusual physical or mental discomfort, discontinue use. All product warranties whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are disclaimed.

BECAUSE THE EFFECTIVE BENEFITS OF EDUCATIONAL EXERCISES, MATERIALS, WORKSHOPS, AND PROGRAMS DEPEND UPON AN INDIVIDUAL’S PERSONAL PRACTICE AND ASSIMILATION OF THE CONTENT, ALL WARRANTIES FOR THE PERSONAL USE OF AUDIO-GUIDANCE EDUCATIONAL EXERCISES, MATERIALS, WORKSHOPS, AND PROGRAMS, WHETHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED.
